Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a type of work authorization that allows F-1 international students to participate in paid or unpaid off-campus academic internships and practicums during their degree program. The purpose of CPT is academic, not solely for employment, and the internship or practicum must be an integral part of the student鈥檚 degree program. 

On August 24, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security鈥檚 (DHS) Student & Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) issued a  that provided all Designated School Officials (DSOs) with guidance regarding Curricular Practical Training (CPT) policy and clarified their  issued on August 12. These messages communicate a narrower interpretation of when CPT may be considered an 鈥渋ntegral part鈥 of an established curriculum. Among other points, SEVP is indicating that CPT should only be authorized when the practical training is required for all students (domestic and international) and the degree or program cannot be completed without it.  CPT based on an elective course that is not required for every student in the program does not meet these requirements. 

In accordance with this guidance, effective August 24, CPT requests submitted to the International Student and Scholar (ISS) Advising office will only be authorized when practical training is a degree requirement for graduation.  

Specifically, moving forward, CPT will only be approved for internships and other employment that are: 

  • embedded in the curriculum,
  • required of all students for degree completion, and
  • supported by a formal agreement with the employer.

ISS will work with students and academic departments to provide additional information regarding the required documentation confirming that a proposed training meets applicable regulatory and university requirements. Approval of requests for CPT authorization may be delayed during this period. 

ISS advising office will provide additional guidance to students and departments. We will be meeting across colleges, schools and departments to identify new opportunities to support internships and work opportunities for international students.  We understand that these adjustments may affect students and academic programs.
